I wouldn't worry about that.

The beta happens sooner than I thought. There will be a lot of action in the community during the weeks to come.
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

Well, this announcement bodes well for a release of HOMM in the near future. If not on the projected release date then not too terribly long afterwards, I would think.

haha. cracked me up. it's true though; if he was referring to StarForce we should be happy to be able to try it out before buying the game. If Starforce pesters me in the beta then I won't buy the game. if it doesn't, then I'll buy it.

I'm not pro-starforce but this is not the right time to be bashing starforce ;P both pro- and antistarforcers will be able to try it out. if it is included in the beta that is.

Call me ignorant but...

Why would they have copy-protection in an open beta?

For one thing, it's quite possible the beta would only work for a set length of time (just like some demos do), so copy protection would help protect against people hacking it to disable the expiry date. But I'm just speculating here so I could be wrong.

I don't want to rain on everyone's parade here, but remember - this is a beta not a demo. If you play it and if the beta is in a non-optimised state (wrt performance, balance and features) then your first impressions of the new game might be tainted by playing an inferior and incomplete build. I honestly have no idea what the current state of the beta is or how complete it will be by Jan 19, but I think you should keep in mind that it's not meant to be a finished game and yet your impressions of the final game will be inevitabley shaped by playing it.

While I agree with your statement, I have to say that open betas are usually a fairly polished game, and the developer/publisher pushes into open beta to do a few things. The main reason is usually to stress test the servers that are going to be used. Other, minor issues are for balance and gameplay, both of which are usually completed during closed beta and only require polishing.

I do have to reiterate, however, that it IS still a beta, as Psychobabble stated. There are HIGH chances that, like with all other open betas, you may find yourself upset about the state of the game, the servers, balance, gameplay, bugs, etc. Do not get all excited thinking you will just be able to play and play and not get bluescreens, crashes, or other issues. While the developers are sure to have found most of the bugs, chances are there will still be some that are lurking around just to piss you off.

Yeah, you're right, it could and probably will be a fairly polished product. But I think there's at least a chance that it will have some fairly serious performance issues and I know many heroes players aren't ready for very high system requirements, this being a turn based game and all. All developer assurances that these will be fixed might not improve a spoiled first impression.

There's also the point that hackers can use an open beta as a "model" to help them hack into the commercial release.

Oh, and as for the original topic, I'm not just excited -- I'm ecstatic! Inferno town, here I come! :D
Far too many people speak their minds without first verifying the quality of their source material.

open beta effect on release date of real thing

Unread postby sumalmamus » 14 Jan 2006, 05:20

When I clicked on the link on our home page, the might and magic page says "play it months before it comes out" or something like that. That to me does not sound like the release date will be anywhere close to the promised February release, and I find it very discouraging. (Not trying to rain on anyone's enthusiasm, it's just very grey day after day here in Minnesota). But really, what use would be an open beta unless they would float it out there for at least a month to get back enough usable feedback to then improve the game for release? Anyone can contradict me please do, I'd love to hear it. sumalmamus
