Famous Battles - Tell Us About Yours!

Unread postby Kalah » 28 Jun 2006, 00:59

I just beat a very big army with... very little. How? Dished out the money on artefacts instead of extra creatures: Together, the Axe of the Mountain Lords, the Shield of the Dwarven Kings and the Dragon Bone Greaves gave me an insane bonus.

My Dungeon army wasn't really small; 120 assassins, some 70 blood furies, about 30 minotaurs, 15 grim raiders, 10 hydras, 12 shadow matriarchs and 3 black dragons. The enemy, however, had about twice that. The battle was won by two things: the extra bonuses yielded by my artefacts, giving my creatures extra umph, and the use of spells. Phantom Forces on the matriarchs was a life saver. The battle lasted about 20 turns, though. Took some time...

Wanna hear something else? In that battle, I lost everything but my matriarchs and my assassins. And once I had won, I had to beat another army the same turn. Once again I was outnumbered and outgunned, yet managed to defeat the enemy through the use of Phantom Forces. Yeah, baby! :proudirule:

Phantom forces got me through the fight with gilraen(with agrael),through fight with godric(with markal),and will probably save me again with raleag. But Id like to talk about the first major fight I had:Agrael versus veyer(or whats hes name, the demon in map 2):

Hard difficulty, and Ive beaten haven hero almost without losses with some 20 succubi, hundredish imps,80 or so overseers,60 or so cerberiaround 10 nightmares and one digit number of pit lords(probably 5 or so).I also had some 50 assasins.Basic strategy was to gate my imps and overseers, strike that group of pitfiends and devils with cerberi and anihilate them(well,a few devils did survive, causing some damage later on),and then phantom force the succubi till the end of my mana(and my poor assasins for that matter). In the end I had just about 50 overseers and a few succubi. My war machines and the rest of my army completely dead, but so was his

Dont hold me on numbers, though, because it was a month ago.

At the end of that inferno battle in map 2 inferno I had 2 pitlords left. Now that one challenging battle. Well designed map imo.

Well, since no one is willing to share,Ill tell about my gilraen and godric fights as well(both on hard):

Gilraen was very tough, since he captured my NW town and I had to fight him there. The map didnt favor me at all.But I still had a nice army:80 something hunters, near 20 treants,40 something unicorns,30 something druids, and a bulk of war dancers and sprite. All upgraded, courtesy of gilraen that opened the hill fort to me(I didnt want to fight those damn elementals). He 100ish hunters,20 something treants,20 something druids, and loads of unicorns, sprites and blade dancers. Also all upgraded, plus his damn frenzy scroll. He also had some 60 unupgraded hunters bought from my newly lost town :disagree: But I finally lucked out when almost all my creatures resisted his druids stone spikes, and my treants resisted his first frenzy out of three.Phantom forced druids and hunters slaughtered his army, especially when I lucked out and manage to dodge two towers with the druids image. In the end,I just had 10 or so treants and 6 unicorns(I actually stepped into the moat with them, not knowing of its special).

And now the great markal  I had some 2k skeleton archers, and other troops too(who cares about them anyway? They do nothing anyway :devious: ),against godrics three months academy. The fight was long, but I had mark of the necromancer on skeleton archers,so I always had mana, and expert summoning with phantom forces. It was a mess. But when he received heaven troops I had around 1500 skeleton archers and some a lich or two.I pupet mastered his crossbowman :devious: and then phantom forced my archers. This part was much shorter, though

I once survived two seiges right after one another with nothing but 40 deep hydras and a level 25 warlock. Meat shields + empowered chain lightning = lol.

Not very famous and neither is it impressive, but I got a real shock on the second Dungeon mission where I had miscalculated the strength of one of my heroes' armies. I was attacked in my castle and fought bitterly to the very end - and won! Or so I thought. I had used resurrection extensively, and it turned out that I just had resurrected troops left. Goddammit!

I blame that mistake on the necro missions earlier.

Well, it's no where as impressive as any of those, but I overcame about 110 plague zombies... with 50 skeletons (not archers) and 10 zombies. It was in the very beginning of a game. Ended that battle with 1 zombie left ._.

Had two really great battles in multiplayer (they were both in same match).

I was Inferno, he was Haven.
I had a pretty nice army, everything except Devils. He had about everything including 3 arch angels.

Teleport Assault on my Horned Overseers in the middle of his priests and archers, he did have some footmen guarding them tho.

Anyway we fought and in the end it was my 20ish~ succubus mistresses vs 15ish~ footmen. I killed them beofore they reached me and as I sat in my chair cheering oevr my victory, I saw an angel appearing on the battlefield ressurecting 13 paladins...

I managed to flee with my hero and we had a 2nd great fight where the same thing happened, I killed all his units but Guardian Angel ressurected 60 Griffins or so. I only had 10 or so Nightmares and 1-2 Pit Lords, I thought I was going to win when my Nightmares got lucky Fear attack 2 times in a row but it proved to difficult in the end and he won.

I had nearly the same situation too on a single player map!
My Dungeon town was besieged by a Haven guy (who was way more stronger cause my main hero in the middle of nowhere had most of the troops) and i ressurected like hell!
Started the battle with 10 black dragons, 20 Shadow Matriachs, 15 Hydras, a few lizards and some..hmmm.. 60 assasins!

At the end i completely lost track of which and how many creatures i already brought back with "raise dead".
When i finally won, every creature died except 3 or 4 asassins.... THAT was close!

By the way, what would have happened if my last creatures had died because of 'raise dead' but the attacking hero's army too?
Would i keep the town?
Or would it even switch to neutral :what: ?

If you fear that you're going to loose a battle because of the raise dead spell, simply make a one-unit stack and leave it out of the battle. : ) Then you shall use the raise dead spell as long as you want to and you don't have to fear that after the battle you will loose all of your stacks...

Well, I'm playing the final map on Slyan and I've managed to kill off 21K skeleton archers with around 300 m.Hunters. I just kept casting ice bolt to freeze the archers into place.

Now how the ai managed to accumulate 21K archers is something I've wondered for a while.

(this is in the 3rd mth week btw)

I lost...

The greatest battles I can talk about were against Gilrael and Veyer... and I lost both!

Veyer survived with a few demons (I didn't bother with them during the battle) and the fight was stopped by a cut scene.

The one with Gilrael was tough and lasted forever. He had 70+ unicorns, hundreds of elder druids and master hunters. I almost win with phantom forces and a complete second army gated.

I lost, but at the end he had only 1 tree standing. :baby:

Funny no one has mentioned the fight against Isabel in the last campaign map four.. Considering the laughable last scenario, Isabel is the 'big boss' of the game, and she sure was big in my game...

I was going for Arcane Omniscience and as I always do in the campaigns, I visited every stat booster I found with Zehir -big mistake, since I had no idea that Isabel was very busy training her troops and I had no idea that all those extra stats weren't going to help in the last map.. Needless to say, Isabel was a beast (thanks to me ;|); she had very high stats coupled with luck, morale, attack, defence and light magic, all expert level with the best perks possible. If I only knew I'd face her later on...

Anyway, when I found her in the third or fourth month, she had 74 archangels, 1300+ squires, 700+ marksmen, 250+royal griffins 100+ inquisitors, and last but certainly not the least, 570+ paladins 8|!! This army, with 5 morale, 5 luck, mass haste, endurance and divine strength against Zehir's pitiful forces of 130+ archliches, 350 vampire lords, 45 spectral dragons, 65 paladins, 63 archangels, 400 marksmen and 200 squires.. No phantom image, phoenixes (with unbelievable stats, someting like 85+ attack & defence, 500-750 damage and 1800 life) or elementals (which came by 93s every casting thanks to Zehir's 39 spell power!) availed me, I got my ass handed back to me all the time. I tried Raelag and soon found out that Empowered Implosions that have 2500+ damage aren't worth anything in gigantic battles, not even a lucky implosion that dealt around 5200 damage to paladins mattered, they were resurrected by the angels next turn.. Next was Shadya, I counted on Expert Dark Magic and Puppet Master/Frenzy on paladins, but the son of a gun AI always put Isabel right after me (when I waited she did as well!) allowing her to immediately cast Cleansing right away.. My ass and my hand bonded a very strong relationship :D...

Luckily Findan was there as well, and I witnessed why luck is the best skill-tree in the game. I employed the same strategy, sacrificing troops to block paladins and squires while I concentrated on Archangels and Paladins from afar, all was going relatively well until my catapult decided to hit the same spot twice and open a path for the paladins.. Gulp :D ... On second try the same crap happened, but thankfully luck came through for me, and I first massacred her battle-diving griffins and then I made a dent on the paladins and angels with consecutive lucky hits... I eventually won with the help (more like sacrifice actually :D ) of phoenixes and elementals but from that army only marksmen and some liches remained..

And then they let her live... Damn, kill her I say, let her rot :D...

Isabel has one castle. You have like five. Who benefits more of the time passing? I couldn't win that fight at first, but after having walked Zehir around to max him out, Isabel was easy. To bad I didn't walk Godric around as well, he would have needed it.

You said it yourself, to max Zehir out.. At that point I was thinking that the fifth mission would be a hard, turtling kind of mission where I'd finally reach Arcane Omniscience, so I visited every single stat booster and sylanna's ancients I could find, a bad strategy...
