That which we call a sprite...
You screwed up that link.
And they're tree spirits, oak tree actualy. Whatever D&D or medieval poets did to them is irrelevant, we already have Pixie/Sprites as tree spirits.

look at the 3rd entries of pixie, it's more a imp than a dryad, out of all those words found in pixie there is no mention of dryad and vice versa. what makes a imp the little winged devil-like creature? it could also mean fairy, but it's things like popular culture, books and games that enforce the devil like idea.
my point is that most mythological creatures takes different forms because they are not real, they are what we believe they are, a dryad could mean the same as a pixie but it doesn't have to be, for instance in wc3 the dryad is like a female/elven centaur

Spare me. Dryads are tree spirits, not "jailbait"... and figures of speech and misconceptions don't apply, thesaurus or not. And Sprite was there.BenchBreaker wrote: try searching on thesaurus.com

And with that your going waaaaaay outta line. (For those of you who do not know what TT means with MGW - it's the Mutated Giant Whale. And that he's plain horror.) Mermaids supposed to be pretty dude. Not mutated...ThunderTitan wrote:If were really gonna go there I might as well call the MGW a Mermaid.

Really nice ideas for the town. As DL said, the name should be changed. I especially like the concept of the Crones/Hags... So similar in certain ways with the Evil Eyes in H4 (pun intended, DL! )

my point exactly, ever seen that sprite commerical/advert? does the sprite in it look like a tree spirit to you?ThunderTitan wrote: Repeat after me: neither does mermaid, that doesn't mean you can call a flying dog-pig a mermaid.
sure it will be silly to call a flying dog-pig a mermaid, but that's because mermaids are very popular legend, much more so than the dryad and ppl have very clear ideas about what a mermaid looks like, as for the dryad, few ppl have even heared of it(certainly less than the mermaid), let alone know what it is.

Just because the people where ur from never heard about dryads doesn't change the fact that Dryads are tree spirits. Even in WC3 they were asociated with forests, giving them animal bodies was just so they wouldn't look like the elves (like the pixie/sprite looks in H5).BenchBreaker wrote: Blabers on about how people are stupid.

Uhm... Warcraft morphs every creature into another-version.. please don't take warcraft as an example! Wendigo's, Dryads, Ogres, Succubi and many others creatures are morphed into child-friendly versions of their former self... Goblins have NOTHING to do with mechanical things, warcraft made that up to make them unique. The Dryad from warcraft is known as HINDE in mythology, a female with the lower body of a deer.ThunderTitan wrote:Just because the people where ur from never heard about dryads doesn't change the fact that Dryads are tree spirits. Actualy it made Goblins mechanics to oppose them to the Alliances Dwarves in WC2.Blaspheme wrote: Uhm... Warcraft morphs every creature into another-version.. please don't take warcraft as an example!

And I was saying that EVEN WC3 had the Dryads asociated with the forest, and we already have Pixies/Sprite as tree spirits.

Yes,it is bloody all right .Anyhow,99% of the creatures in fantasy worlds derive from this or that mythology(not counting the ones made simply by enlarging existing animals).I can think of only few exceptions.Mind flayers and aboleths from AD&D.ThunderTitan wrote:Oh, for crying out loud. maybe i've been too sarcastic, and we are going no where with all this sarcasm. you are not wrong, and i am not saying that the dryad can't be a pixie, but there is no need for you to be so fixated about the idea that a dyrad must be a pixie/sprite. like i mentioned before, the soft drink Sprite is a product of the coca-cola company, a big multi-national corporation, surely they'll now what a sprite looks like, but what do you see in their Sprite advert? a small monkey/gollum like creature that's green! and in that advert they said: "you might think the spirit is a thirst quenching soft drink, but it is also a sort of goblin” and that thing looked no where like a goblin, but who am I to say what a goblin looks like?ThunderTitan wrote:Oh, for crying out loud. like DL said, most mythical creatures are inspired from this and that, and many of them takes different forms in different fantasy worlds, unless they are uber popular like the mermaid, they don't have to take a definite shape. as long as it's relatively close to it's original description, it'll be fine, now i did put it in the nature town and not inferno/death town didn't i?

Oh, you missunderstand. A Dryad must be a tree spirit. A Pixie doesn't, it just have to be a little elf-like. But if Pixies are tree spirits the poor Dryad gets left out.
You want to change a creature, change the Pixie, not the Dryad.
