HOMM IV GS disk space error message

Well, I've found a copy of HOMM IV GS (original) and I'm trying to install it. However, I get past the system requirements with flying colors (I've got 5 gig of disk space avail) and then it says I don't have the disk space available to continue with the install and it cuts out. Any suggestions?

(Please don't tell me to upgrade my computer or get a DVD drive, unless you'd like to pay for it. I don't game much anymore on my PC.)

How much space does the game need?
I'd say 5 gig would be sufficient, otherwise I suggest cleaning up a little removing programs/files you don't use and cleaning the trashcan.

Oh yes, 5G is plenty of room. I think it only needed 100MB. I've erased, moved, defragged, compressed ... anything I could think of. I think part of the problem is that I loaded HOMM IV onto my outboard drive to save room, and now I can't remove it because it can't find the files, even though I was asked when I installed it which drive I wanted to put it on. The expansion isn't giving me a choice before determining how much space is left ... but the funny thing is that it recognizes my F drive as an option of how much room I have on the system analysis.

I'd love to be able to take off the main game to start over. Any suggestions?

Maybe you should manually uninstall H4. Delete all H4 files and folders (just go the folder where you have installed it and delete everything). Then clean the registry entries for H4. To clean registy entries, follow these steps:

1. Click start and then click Run...

2. Type regedit and hit Enter.

3. You are now in the Registry Editor. In the Registry Editor go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > New World Computing > Heroes of Might and Magic IV

and delete this folder completely. (You can also delete the entire New World Computing folder if you wish)

4. In the Registry Editor go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Uninstall > Heroes of Might and Magic IV

and delete this folder completely.

5. In the Registry Editor go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > New World Computing

and delete everything H4 related (or completely delete the New World Computing folder).

6. In the Registry Editor go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > 3do

you will see Status and User folders here. Click them and delete everything related to H4.

7. Restart Windows. You can now re-install H4.

That ironically may means that you have too much of free space. But in such case I forget the solution, it will be lingering somewhere here or on the HC. (Because I remember that someone developed a way how to skip this dialog.)

Yeap, the installer there has no clue what a GB is and it treats it as MB I think. At least that's what happens when I try to install Heroes III, it says that RAM check failed because I have too much of it. Didn't have any disk errors there, however.

I'd love to skip over that part, but it doesn't give you an opportunity. It just says that error and kicks you out, no matter if you hit the OK or the X.

TUK, thanks for your brilliant explanation there. I really appreciate it, and it did the trick as far as uninstalling it. Unfortunately, there's a bigger issue, and I'm surprised I didn't think of it before. Now my HOMM4 (regular) disk won't bring up the setup menu. It'll bring up the PDF files on the disk. It'll bring up the Support menu (Defrag, ect.) But it won't bring up the setup menu. I can manually start the setup, and the InstallShield will run, then the grey title screen starts to come up with the HOMM4 graphic, but then it kicks to desktop within 1 second. It's not the disk drive, because an audio disk started on autorun and played correctly, then the HOMM IV GS disk began on autorun but stopped when it noticed HOMM4 wasn't on the computer.

Any suggestions?

That is weird indeed. I have no idea what causes it. A possibility is that some left over Installshield files are interfering with the setup process. I suggest emptying these folders (before re-running the Setup):

C:\Documents and Settings\"Computer Name"\Local Settings\temp

and

C:\WINDOWS\temp

Ok TUK, I think you're on the right track, but it's still not working. I've deleted everying I could out of those temp files. (It didn't seem like the couple of files that remained had anything to do with HOMM.) Here's some more info for you: It wasn't the "Setup" file I could get to partially run, but just the InstalSheild Setup file. Also, the other programs on the disk that require a setup (Acrobat Reader 5.0 and GameSpy Arcade) both launch perfectly and begin a setup process, which leads me to believe that it has to be an orphan file somewhere on my hard drive for HOMM 4. Any more sugguestions? Btw, thanks for your help!

Step 1: Try to move the content from cd into some folder on your computer and run the installation from here. (optional)
Step 2: Disable any antivirus, antimalware, realtime scanner, firewall etc on your computer an try again. You should achieve victory. :p

Yeap, you can use Step 2 or just do a clean boot entirely. What's your OS, by the way?

Also, Heroes IV doesn't really need to be installed, as long as its files are on your HDD it will run fine, so you could try extracting the contents and just running it from there.

OK, here's the latest:

Moved all files to hard drive and tried to launch from both the Setup and Autorun. No go. The Setup did nothing, the Autorun brought up the first small menu with Play, Exit, etc, but did nothing after that.

Turned off all things in the startup under my msconfig to turn off any back-door antiviral software, and that didn't work either, whether it was from the disk or the files I copied on to the hard drive earlier.

Next interesting piece of the puzzle: I just dug out my HOMM 3 disk. Not only does the autorun start right up from inserting the CD into the drive, it passes the system requirements that were the problem with the HOMM 4 expansion disk in the first place! lol

I'm now thinking a corrupted setup file on my main HOMM 4 disk. What say you guys?

Well folks, I've come back to say that I've got to be the biggest moron on the planet. This is just after I thought I was the most brilliant person on the planet. lol

Something told me that I hadn't gotten all the files out, so I used the "search" on the Windows start menu for any files called "Heroes," "3DO," or "Computing." Sure enough, I found some more files -- including an orphan registry -- and deleted it. So I rebooted and thought for sure this time I would be able to install. So I opened my disk drive to try to allow the autorun to start. It was the first time I looked at the disk as the drive opened. You know ... the disk with the word "PLAY (Disk 2)" stamped on it. ARRRRRRRGHHHHH!!!!!!

I can't thank you guys enough for helping me with all of this. I'm now going to load the game directly onto my C: drive instead of my F: drive to see if the initial problem of the GS Disk Space error will be resolved.
