MUGEN!
This is an awesome and free fighter.it's an open source one. You can go and create your own characters if you want or download others. The sky is the limit. Tonight I fought with Peter Griffin, and we kicked Krusty's ass pretty hard. I downloaded a pre made package with 250 characters in it.

Go and check it out, few characters that are in the package I gt. Paper Mario, Peter Griffin, sub-zero, chicken (from family guy fightscene) noob saibot, ken, ryu, apocalypse, megaman, link, pikachu and SO MANY MORE...
This is truly awesome!

Unfortunately, it's not open sourcedarknessfood wrote:This is an awesome and free fighter.it's an open source one.
And the developers vanished, but it's still a good game. (and it's free of course)
Before having this problems with the RAM I was actually working on some characters, optimizing the ones I donwloaded -- because they weren't always faithful, especially some bad ones. I'm trying to make a very faithful SF3 clone, that will work with 2v2 (I have Makoto, Chun Li and Twelve done 90%, still need to clean them up a bit, but that's delayed till well into the future cause of my 'problems' meh).
but now I'm busy making a recovery USB stick and buying my new comp, man am I slooooooow.... it's almost a month since and it's gonna last into the future (until I reinstall everything all over, man I hate it).
I like fighting games cause they don't last long and lately I've very few free time to spend playing. Plus they are cool sometimes.

Open Source means to modify the game's source code that is compiled into the executable. If you can create maps or characters for a game it doesn't necessarily mean that it's open source.
I never heard of Mugen before so I have no clue if it's open source or not though.

No matter how powerful one becomes, there is always someone stronger. That's why I'm in a constant pursuit of power, so I can be prepared when an enemy tries to take advantage of me.
Yes you can make characters with its unique format -- I made a few myself (well actually "corrected" and "optimized" already downloaded ones). It's like scripting -- you can make scripts, but you can't modify the program itself (that is, the script INTERPRETER) because you don't have the source.darknessfood wrote:I thought it was open source , a lot of characters have been made...
Which is a pity because the developers vanished and no one can 'continue' it (e.g: fix bugs etc...)

What's so bad about it? You can create almost any other fighting game with it, as far as I could see.Suleman wrote:Where's the "I love fighting games, but I hate MUGEN" option?

That depends on the character design, you can make it play like Street Fighter 3 if you want

If you're some kind of bored game developer with insane artistic skills, tons of free time and the ability to dabble with the broken code of the program itself.Asheera wrote:What's so bad about it? AFAIK, no balanced fighting game has even been made using MUGEN, and the character fest games make me lose interest very, very fast. I'll rather take a balanced game with a competitive/online scene, like SSF2T, rather than any MUGEN game, even if it has less characters or simpler characters or characters that aren't based on Homer Simpson.

Ah you meant the characters made with Mugen are not great and well balanced? Perhaps, but that doesn't mean Mugen is a horrible game itself.
As Borsuc says it all depends on the character design - you can make them so that it plays like SF3.
The fact that you don't like any character packages made for Mugen so far doesn't mean Mugen itself sucks. It's like a very interesting game has no maps for your taste.

There's lots of bad characters out there but trust me, there are also faithful ones (faithful means, trying to reproduce the 'original' as much as possible).

So? Why would I play a half-assed game with some custom characters when I can play a game made by professionals? All in all, MUGEN offers very little tactical content, especially if one considers the amount of time, searching and tweaking needed to get a decent game out of it.

Professionals?Suleman wrote:So? Why would I play a half-assed game with some custom characters when I can play a game made by professionals?
That's why they make so many balancing patches.
That's why people MOD these games, cause you know, the professionals do a very good job at it. (and for those games that can't be modded, they say "it sucks").
Look @ Half-life --> is Counter-Strike a half-assed game cause it was "OMG" not made by professionals? What about The Specialists? Do you honestly think they are worse than the original Half-life? (Counter-strike may be, but not The Specalists, trust me). or Firearms.
Take also Need For Speed and the huge amount of "better" cars for download out there. let's face it, developers always do it limited.
Where's your spirit of modding?Suleman wrote:All in all, MUGEN offers very little tactical content, especially if one considers the amount of time, searching and tweaking needed to get a decent game out of it.

Developers sometimes do things limited because limited is 1. more balanced 2. more satisfying 3. allows better competitive play. This, of course, is not always the case. Modding takes the game into another direction. Of course multiplayer mods of HL are better at multiplayer gameplay, since HL is not, as such, a multiplayer game at all.
I like fighting games that are made and balanced for competitive play that favors skill, timing and tactics instead of combos. I am not saying this is impossible to achieve in MUGEN, but I am saying that it is at least until now, been completely hypotethical. MUGEN modders do not have the same resources or experience that are available to, say, Capcom, and therefore, for them, making a game is extremely hard and balancing it is even harder.
I am not trying to agitate you, but you managed to agitate me with the poll in this topic, which implies that anyone who doesn't like MUGEN and likes fighting games is wrong. If you either add another option to the poll or remove it entirely, I will be far calmer.

Show me a fighting game without tiers and I show you a fighting game with no variation. Balance in a game doesn't mean that every character or side or race is the same, it means that every character has advantages that they then try to use against others. This should be basic knowledge for a Heroes player. Now, as a Heroes player, you know that Castle's advantage of cheap and effective units turns out to be better than Fortress's defensive specialization. Does this mean that Castle will automatically defeat Fortress? No, because the game is, despite its faults, pretty well balanced.Asheera wrote:Capcom balance greatly? If I remember correctly, in SF3 Yang is inferior to Yun (he has less priorities, etc)
Despite its faults, SF3:3S is still more balanced than any Mugen game I've witnessed. Only a few characters have excessive combos and exploits, and even those are not impossible to overcome. Now, if you had taken MvC2 as an example, then I might have agreed.
In my last post, I tried to ease down the hostility and ask for a compromise. Could you take a look at that? I'm really just asking for you to ackknowledge that the poll in this topic is faulty and offensive and that there should either be a third option or no poll at all.
