The way I got my job; I went around town handing out a dozen CVs to hotels, shops and cafés. Got two hits, and my current employer needed me to start immediately.

that doesn't work so much for what I'm applying for, you need to write out a statement addressing the selection criteria, a cv, a cover letter specific to the job .... it's NOT fun

Tell me about it. I'm willing to work for free and I can't even get an externship. I feel like a reject from eHarmony. :(

Maybe it's because I'm too exciting. On Halloween, I'm doing laundry and studying for the MPRE! Excitment overload! It's so stimulating I fell asleep after 25 pages.
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

I'm certainly not willing to work for free, chasing jobs in the early 6 figures AUD, and they don't kid around on their applications :(

I just read that the Aussie dollar is worth 93.45 US cents .... a 23 year record high .... it seems crazy - not so long ago it was worth in the mid 60 cents region

Don't get too excited about it. I'd imagine it's really because the value of the US dollar is sinking like it's wearing concrete shoes.

that's part of it, the other part is that our economy is going quite smoothly, we're not affected too much by the american property problems, and our current greatest strength is the chinese and indian insane demand for resources, of which we have a damn lot
