Well, I thought The Island was great entertainment. I bought it and I've never regretted it :)

Since I've studied that sort of thing, I guess there's a difference there. I just can't enjoy a movie where I know the premise is impossible... Science fiction is all right, since they're mostly based on theory - you know, "it could be possible 500 years from now", that type of thing.

No it's not. The Jante law say "Don't think you're any better than the rest of us" (basically). It doesn't specify that when you find a movie unlikely, it won't entertain you

P.S.: Does that sentence even make sense? :|

No, honestly, I enjoyed "The Matrix" a lot, because it's a suspension of disbelief; a suspension of the laws of physics and logic that makes sense. People can destroy concrete pillars with their bare fists and dodge bullets because thery're in a computer program. It makes sense. Doing things that negate the laws of nature in a supposedly normal (real) environment, does not... stop talking now? You bet.

:D

Which reminds me of how cool Crank was...they even explained how the Beijing Cocktail worked. :)

And, I actually understood what they meant! :D

Biology FTW! :)

I saw Knocked Up and Wrong Turn 2 today.

Knocked Up was HILARIOUS!!!
I can't imagine how it would feel in real life, to go through that. :D
Nothing more I can say...go watch it. :)

Wrong Turn 2...well...uh...so very gory. It wasn't bad...but it felt very clichéd.

Clishés aren't bad, so long as they're treated as such. If you state one in earnest, expect nothing but laughter from me.

Oh Kalah, you make me sad, almost every movie made has some dodgy premises .... is what makes them movies!!!!

you'll never enjoy anything that way

No, there are lots of good movies out there. But if something is supposed to be experienced as real, the premise also needs to be in accordance with reality.

I love "A Knight's Tale" and its use of parody. In this one scene, you see Will's helpers standing and watching, and splinters fly towards them (from the camera's position). The amount of splinters is just absurd, and they're not even ducking to avoid them - even though it was mentioned earlier in the film that they can take your eyes out. So why is it funny? Because it's so unreal. In the final shot of that scene, half a lance actually comes flying, and one of them catches it nonchalantly with one hand.
This is in fact a parody of all those boxing movies in which blood is sprayed all over the arena, or action flicks where cars explode with the ferocity of a fuel tanker. I just love this thing.

fair enough, but I still maintain that if you require reality in your premises to enjoy a movie then you will not enjoy many movies at all

anyway, finished Fantastic 4 - Rise of the Silver Surfer .... it was Radd!!!! :D

very, very cool, but then SS is so the best Marvel character ever created, and he's taken down the Hulk too

A cool guy :) Also liked the fact that Dr Doom returned to his original form and kept the mask. It was a bit weird that the surface metal was his skin.
I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

The "stupid premise" of The Island didn't bother me as much as the "stupid premise" of Batman Begins, and even in the latter, the movie was well enough made to be entertaining. 95% of the comic book movies have silly premises that make no physical sense, yet they're fun to watch. The Island definitely had some egregious science handwaving going on, but it wasn't any worse than any other Hollywood movie, and some of the action scenes were way over the top, but I thought the movie was quite entertaining. Not to mention I'd sit through anything that has Scarlett Johansson in it.

Maybe, but Galactacus wasn't well done. At least he wasn't really like in the comic book. It was nice to know that Viktor von Doom didn't even have to change his name.

I saw a movie with Scarlett Johansson called "A love song for Bobby Long". It's a little slow but I think it's worthwhile. John Travolta is pretty good as an elderly washed up drunk and SJ tries to shape him up. No unrealistic premise here. It's like "Lost in Translation" with a real plot.
