Short version: methanol seems similar to ethanol, but kills you instead of making you drunk. The antidote is what you should have been drinking in the first place; ethanol. Ethanol being of course what is commonly referred to as alcohol, even though both ethanol and methanol and some other stuff are all alcohols :)

Ethric, the Chemistry major, ladies & gentlemen...

But you're right. Guess you learned a bit in law school after that big methanol case, huh? ;)

That's just everyday trivia, and of course having people dying like flies on the news from drinking the stuff heightens your knowledge a bit... but nothing to do with law school.

For those of you who aren't Norwegian... there's been this huge court & media case tha past couple of years, with large amounts of methanol appearing on the illegal booze market. Basically, people who smuggle booze into the country sold some methanol as ethanol, causing several deaths. Some of the big fish (the guys behind the smuggling) went to jail, even though they claimed to have no knowledge of methanol in their products. The court didn't believe them.

You're not the first one to say so. Of course, KrF (Christian People's Party) wouldn't have none of that, and they received some powerful support from a lobby group - the association for people with alcohol injuries/deseases.

Ignoring of course that, in fact, there aren't anyone going around putting guns to peoples heads and forcing them to buy and drink booze.

But how else are they going to get the courage to try and score with mediocre chicks at bars?

Thing is, politically, liberation of stringent policies is always difficult beause it's so controversial. The argument that easy access promotes over-use is hard to escape, and thus it resurfaces in every alcohol debate... Problem is, nobody knows what would happen if Norwegian alcohol laws were relaxed. All ww could do is try it, but no politician has the guts in case it backfires.
