I think that premise is based on rather false logic. Who can really claim with any certainty why he was not a poet? We do not always end up doing what we are meant to do or what we are best at.

And you are not the first person I've heard negative criticism from regarding the poetry of J.R.R. Tolkien. However, I happen to adore it, and wholeheartedly reject the snobbish and elitist views of most 'critics'.

And i could look up stuff on the net, as i do seem to recall he tried publishing poetry, not that my memory is trustworthy, but i'm too bored.
