Heroes5 Map Editor Problems - Help!!!

Unread postby Drax » 02 Jul 2007, 03:34

I have been a player and map maker of Heroes 2,3, and 4 for years. So I finally broke down and bought Heroes 5 today, installed it and ran all patches in sequence through 1.05. When I try making a simple map in the editor and save it, it says my heroes do not have names, but when I select them and do edit/object properties, I checked name and entered one. Still check map says they both have no name. Then when I run the game I see my map and can select it but the 'Start Game' option is not enabled. I don't know if that is because of the name problem.
Is the problem with the 1.05 patch or my ignorance with the editor? Anyone make a map successful with the 1.05 patch yet?

That kind of sounds like an ignorance with the editor...

I suggest you remove the heroes in question and then replace them, that technique has solved a number of problems for me too.

It doesn't matter how many times you delete and re-create the heroes.
Can someone who has 1.05 give the following a try -
Start a new single player tiny map, place a town and a hero on it, save it and, the errors are -
'Map has no restrictions for hero level',
'Map has no rumors',
'Town without specialization',
'Several heroes have no name',
'Several Heroes has problem with their Army'

All of which can be fixed by adding the element mentioned except the hero name. Adding a name to the hero has no effect. When the map is selected in the game, the 'Start' option is not enabled.

Can anyone who has version 1.05 give this a try, and let me know your results? Thanks.

The errors that editor gives are usually not anything to pay attention to. Most likely you cannot start the map since the Editor, beside confusing people with error messages, is a pacifist an has without telling you marked all players as friends and allies. Find "teams" under map properties and ensure that not all players are in the same team.

*Nods*

Those errors usually shouldn't stop you from opening the map, so the hero name shouldn't either. I suggest you follow Pitsu's directions first, and if that's not the problem just scroll around the basic options of your map. The reason you can't start the map should be something obvious (like Pitsu pointed out), and probably not the 'hero has no name' error.

The last two times I couldn't start one of my maps it was because I had only one effective player on the map. In other words, you won't be able to start the map unless you have at least two opposing forces. As Pitsu says, the editor makes some settings by default that can make the map unusable. Having only one team is one good example of not having two opposing forces. But, I believe I have managed to find other ways, I just cannot recall the specifics.

Thanks for the ideas. I got it to work.

Well, in my two maps it turned out to be 2 different causes for the map not being playable. In one map I had to go to Map Properties/Heroes and select all. By default for some reason the editor has no heroes selected for this map. I then saved and the problem was fixed.
However, I have worked enough with the editor now to see that that might or might not have been why. Sometimes just changing something (anything) on the Map Properties tabs causes strange changes in the map.
The main lesson I have learned is that you should save often and always as a new version because like all buggy software, you never know when the editor is going to trash your map. Sometimes a trashed map just can't be fixed.
I have also checked out the functions in the scripts and can kindof see why the developers can't seem to get things straight. As a software developer and programmer myself for over 20 years, I know that when a design is poor and the foundation is just OFF a little, it makes the entire effort very difficult. Microsoft often makes similar messes in its tools and products. Sono matter how successful a company is, if the engeneers aren't the type that can see the big picture, they are going to poor the foundation wrong and the whole building will be unstable.

Well thats my 2 cents worth. So thanks to all for the help. I am currently wrapping up a great map and am ready to delve into the scripting (arghhh - I sure do miss the good programming found in the H4, H3, and H2 editors - now those folks were pros.)
