Agree with Banedon. the new rule promotes inflation. When it was posted, the Chain mail was below 100 gold, which I think was a fitting price. Now everything will be very overpriced. A better rule had been to give 10000 gold to anyone who had won anything in the first three lots, and not announce until after it was done.

pepak wrote:I wonder, why are you guys bidding so much on items from lot #3? I mean, chainmail sold for 1010 and Longbow for 1000 - how does it compare to Wizard Ring for 200 or Apprentice's Handbook for 500? Scarab of Summoning seems rather expensive, too, as do many others. Are these your real estimates of the things' values or are you just bidding because you've wanted that item in the beginning and now you can't stop despite the price?

Banedon wrote:No, it's because of the new rule. If I bid 1010 for the Chainmail and I get it, I've actually made a profit of 3990 (versus the case I don't bid for anything). That's why I don't like the rule.
My understanding is that you only have to win any item in any of the first five lots to get the 5000 bonus. Why not win an item you actually like?

Anyway, it was just an attempt to get some discussions here, not just bids.

I didn't think it would inflate Lot #3. There are still Lot #4 and Lot #5 for the 5k bonus. The real reason is to get more bidders in the game. We only had 11 winning bidders at that time. The ammount of winning bidders is how I'm determining how much money everyone gets (the whole idea was to keep the auction at around 1 million GP total.

With more winning bidders, we have more people playing the game. People that played in the first five rounds (and won) should have more money than those that started later. It's that simple. If they are trying to BLOCK people, they will pay far more for their items and will far less for later bids.

Don't pay more than you're willing to spend. My ultimate hope is to have over 30 different winning bidders. That would be a successful game!

NOTE: Also, by awarding money to people who win bids, it rewards activity. I don't want thirty people trying to "wait out" the auction in the hopes that they can clean up later.

Anyway, it was just an attempt to get some discussions here, not just bids.
Because some people (like me) are saving for a particular artifact. I like the Mayhem Staff, but if I bid 5,000 for it I may not have enough money for that other artifact. Bidding 1,000 for the Chainmail gives me 29,000 total for that artifact.

Also, some people don't like any artifact sufficiently to bid high for it. If I get the Chainmail for 1,000 I'd reap 4000 extra cash; if I get the Mayhem Staff for 5,000 I'd be slightly more happy but have no extra money.

Unnatural Armor to 3,000.
Helm of Command to 7,500.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. You should be able to get a very good item at a pretty good price. In most cases, people are dropping too much for the early artifacts, especially lots #1 and lot #3. The influx of new bidders helped a little but mostly I think it was because their weren't other items to bid on...

If ten people pop 500 gp items up to 5000, you will actually be making out better than those folks. Make quality bids and you should get something you like in these two lots. The truth is that some people are going to have to start conserving their money since they "overspent" already. It doesn't matter if it was a key item or otherwise.

Oh yeah... Kalah's got the Scarab. Consider it sold. I'll post an update soon.
