You got a point there, but we shouldn't shy away from this disscussion just because we think we won't be able to reach a conclusion.
Now back on topic,
I could understand that for people it's hard to get a copy of the game legally, but that doesn't give you the right to get one illegally. That's like saying: 'I can't go to a prostitute, so it's in my right to rape someone' or 'I can't buy that car, so it's in my right to steal it.' It's still wrong what you do. Now I won't say I've never played an illegal game, even though if I really, really wanted to I could've bought those games. And there is actually no way to talk myself out of that. But games that I really wanted, I've bought.
The thing is, a game that I'd really want, is in my eyes a good game. Good games don't come out of nothing. So I'm willing to give the makers some results for their hard work.
Now for all of you who are sdownloading it and buying it 'afterwards', please, why would you? You do have the goal to buy it, but once it's in the stores you'll think 'Why should I?' And you'll go on using your illegal copy.
Oh and then the "I'm using it to test the game" people. That's where the demo is for. Not an illegal copy. And why would you want to test a game? If you're doubting whether to buy, have a little patience, read reviews, come to a conclusion then.

In other word some mailman's kid will be very happy for getting an original game.
You want people to buy ur game? Make sure it actualy provides something that will make them want to play it for more than a month.
Diablo 2 for example, I heard that in the US when Blizzard temp bans a cd-key it's very likely that the guy playing will go out and buy another copy so he doesn't have to wait.
And about hurting somebody: sure it does, but then you having a job means somebody else is unemployed.
If ur not going to buy it anyway it's not going to affect their bottom line, and if you do buy it when it comes out they get ur money, so why should they care?
And shouldn't the fact that you give them money when you could have gotten it for free make them feel better about their work?
Also, ever read a book you didn't own?! Intelectual theft right there.

I'm not a downloader, I'm waiting to buy... but I understand where people are coming from when they say "they'll download now and buy later".Now for all of you who are sdownloading it and buying it 'afterwards', please, why would you? You do have the goal to buy it, but once it's in the stores you'll think 'Why should I?' And you'll go on using your illegal copy.
There are multiple reasons why this can and WILL happen with these folks.
#1) Because they say they will (you think nobody ever sticks to their word? What a pessimist).
#2) Because they want more then "just the game"... some folks like the book manual and/or charts and any other extras that come with the FULL RETAIL version.
#3) Because they understand if they don't buy, they may not see any more games like this (expansions, HOMM6, etc). Just because you download it, doesn't mean you don't understand no-money-to-developer = no-more-games-like-this.
#4) They want to reward the developer for a good game. Don't think just because they download it now doesn't mean they don't want to reward the guy who made it (and encourage more such work). Ever heard of "ShareWare"? I know HOMMV is NOT shareware, but you are saying "if they download it now they'd never buy it" like it's written in stone. The shareware industry thrives on giving away a product and getting money back in return by grateful people. Granted, this doesn't always happen, but it's such a pessimistic and grim view on the world and your fellow man to think NOBODY would pay later for something they have now... if such was the case, there would never be any shareware ever.
I haven't downloaded the game... I'm waiting to buy... but I also don't believe that just because somebody does download the game, every one of them is lying about buying it later when it does come out... that's such a low view of your fellow man.

And that's exactly what game companies should ask themselves. Look at Blizzard, until WoW came out they were still patching Starcraft and Diablo 2.Thelonious wrote: Now for all of you who are downloading it and buying it 'afterwards', please, why would you?
And for people that think games aren't overpriced riddle me this: How can a localized version of a 50$ game cost 20$? I doubt they'd be selling at a loss in a coutry where games don't sell so well.

Ever buy something with a credit card? Have it now, pay for it later? Couldn't wait, eh?King Imp wrote: Heaven forbid people wait two more weeks considering they've been waiting four years since the last Heroes game.
I'm still waiting... it's hard though! It's hard holding out for 4 years, 11 months and two weeks... not sure I can wait much longer... (but I will)

Please. With a credit card payment, you've basically signed on that you will pay for it later, whereas with the pirate copy, you're in reality under no obligation save the moral one to pay for it.Wolfshanze wrote: Ever buy something with a credit card? I have. I also noticed that you conveniently failed to reply to the whole "dumping on somebody's hard work" which would kind of invalidate your whole "i have not damaged ubi or nival in any way" argument. If you have damaged them in any way, then my argument -- and analogy -- are valid. If you haven't, then of course my original statement is bunk.Arzang wrote:First of all; if I rape someone, I can't say that it's okay since I am going to marry her later on. why? because she wouldn't marry me. and you DO know that a husband can rape his wife right?Bandobras Took wrote:It wasn't meant to be. I was serious. I said the difference was only one of degree, not of kind. Both acts believe that a person's own immediate gratification is better than the well-being of others.
downloading this game though is something different and let me tell you why; I am downloading the game before it's released and I will pay upon release. I have not damaged ubi or nival in any way before the purchase (unlike rape) and I can still make the purchase (unlike rape).
the act IS different in kind, not in degree. think about it.
But until you show me how ubi or nival is supposed to know whether a person who downloads a game illegally also buys an authorized copy, you've got no basis for saying it doesn't hurt them.
If it doesn't damage them in any way, why are they going to the trouble of forbidding people from doing it?
Unless I've missed a press release somewhere, the people who made the game have asked us not to download it illegally. Period. They have made no provision for those who plan on buying it later. If we go against their wishes, we are wronging them.

Downloading a game illegelly doesnt damage the company. It is providing that download that damages them. Most of the people that download a pirate copy wouldnt buy the game in the first place,so you cannot say that they did any damage to the company. On the other hand, some were going to buy the game, yet they went with a pirate copy since its cheaper. They are damaging the company. But,there is also a third group:Those that bought the game(or the sequels,or expansions) just because they tried out the pirate copy first.Which of those two groups(the second and third) is bigger,it is hard to say.People are just asuming that the second group is much larger. But is it really so?Maybe they cancel each other. But its neither of those three groups that is to blame if the companie looses money. Its those that provided those people with a pirate copy that are to blame. And,lets face it,most of them are people that work for that company,so it is on the inside that they should concentrate their copy protection, not on the outside.

Actually, the prevalence of piracy and its impact on profits scares away investors, so it does damage the company. Whether or not you pay for it later, the market perceives it as lost profit. That perception will damage a company. Whether it actually is lost profit is pointless.DaemianLucifer wrote:Downloading a game illegelly doesnt damage the company. It is providing that download that damages them. Most of the people that download a pirate copy wouldnt buy the game in the first place,so you cannot say that they did any damage to the company.
The scene from Sneakers where they show how to make a Bank financially shaky simply by making people think it's financially shaky is an example on a larger scale.

Same old argument, still dosent change the fackt that ill not get to play the expantion becus of piracy!DaemianLucifer wrote:Downloading a game illegelly doesnt damage the company.

Huh?! What does them knowing about it has to do with their bottom line?! Saying that it might hurt the users because they migth use draconic cd-protection schemes because of this I'd get, but if you still give them the money what do they lose?!Bandobras Took wrote: But until you show me how ubi or nival is supposed to know whether a person who downloads a game illegally also buys an authorized copy, you've got no basis for saying it doesn't hurt them.
And I notice nobody answered my question about reading a book they didn't buy, you bunch of intelectual thieves.

It's called a library. They don't charge you to take out books. They will though if you refuse to return them.
And that wasn't the point at all. If my country had a place you could go play all the games you wanted without paying you'd see it as not hurting the developers?
