I don't seem to be able to create a 2 player map with only one hero (like the first game in the campaign). Apparently you can't start a custom game unless there are two players (one computer). Also, you don't metion that you need to drag a stack back into the staging area to split it (or at least thats the only way I have found).



Also if you split your stacks, besure you have no more than 6 before approaching a stack that may want to join you.
