*FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions or problems with our mod, please read our FAQ first before contacting us. The answer just might be here.

Q-01: I want to install the mod, but don't know if I'll like it with all the changes. Besides, maybe I'll need the original game for multiplayer. That means reinstalling Heroes IV all over again!

A: There's nothing to worry about, you won't need to reinstall the game. After installation of the mod, you'll have two executable files - an old one and a new one (they can be distinguished by the creation date). The former is a regular Heroes executable with no changes whatsoever. The newer one is the game executable with the mod (hence, all the changes present). Just run the one you want! Also, a shortcut to the 'modded' exe file can be placed on desktop by the installer, if you want. All the changes are kept in a separate file that has nothing to do with the "regular" heroes. Thus, there's definitely nothing to be worried about!

Talking about multiplayer, most games on Gamespy are currently played using our Equilibris mod.

Q-02: Do I need to back up some files?

A: Neither the installation nor the uninstallation ever changes the original heroes files. The only files affected by the installation are the "heroes4.exe" and the "campaign_editor.exe" and even these are not changed, only copied to the same directory with a different name. All the mod changes are then applied to these copies, not to the original files. But if you want to be more than 100% safe - back up these 2 files.

Q-03: The installer requests a path to install the mod to. What do I do?

A: Normally setup can define your Heroes-IV directory correctly. But if this is not your case (for example, the path is wrong or empty) - just select the directory path in which your Heroes IV files are installed. (eg "C:/Program Files/3DO/Heroes of Might and Magic 4").

Q-04: Do I need to install all previous versions of the mod to install the most recent one?

A: No. Every new version has all the changes specified in readme, so all you need is working Heroes-IV installation.

Q-05: Do I need to uninstall the previous mod version to install a new one?

A: Actually, no. Every new mod version uses the same file names (ignored by original Heroes), so installation will simply overwrite the old files with new ones. But this may change in the future, and uninstalling the mod only takes a few seconds, so why not to do it to be 100% sure?

Q-06: Which versions of the game are compatible with the mod?

A: As for now, all versions are supported. Most likely you will need to download files heroes4.exe and campaign_editor.exe (with these files, everything works perfectly with any translation/version of the game-Russian, English, Pirated :)) from this site, as we can not support all possible language versions and editions of the game. For details look at Q-09 (well, the Answer to Q-09 that is :P)

By the way, if something actually worked (or didn't work) - let us know about it, pointing out the version of your game and the mod. Something like "Installed mod 3.1 on Romanian Heroes - Winds of War. Everything's perfect!" or "Installed mod 3.1 on the original Mongolian Heroes - doesn't work".

Q-07: Although I have a working Heroes-IV installation, the installer doesn't like the file's checksum. What do I do?

A: First of all, cancel the installation. Then, copy your heroes4.exe and campaign_editor.exe to back them up to a safe place (if you haven't done that already). Now download heroes4.exe and campaign_editor.exe from the Downloads section. Extract the download to the folder with Heroes, and run the install again. The message about the checksum should not appear anymore, thus enabling the mod to install properly. Remember - in any case your Original version remains playable.

Q-08: Does Equilibris enchance AI?

A: The task is far from trivial. Starting from 3.4 AI players have no less than 3 stacks, if possible. AI players do not build unneeded (for heroes or other buildings) mage guilds any more. Starting from 3.5 AI players use different formations and split stack into uneven parts.

The other changes being made to the game should also indirectly enhance the AI - the more balanced the game is, the more limited is the chance of it making a "bad" choice.

You can always check AI enchencements in "Changes" section of this site.

Q-09: How do I install Equilibris on Standard Heroes Edition or on Gathering Storm?

A: Well, there is one trick to install Equilibris on Gathering Storm or even on Standard Edition. Try to do the following:
- Rename your "heroes4.exe" to "heroes4old.exe" and make a new shortcut on your Desktop, if you need it.
- Download the "heroes4_sfx.exe" from Downloads section. Extract it to the game directory.
- Download the Mod Installer. Install the mod as if you had Winds of War.
- Then find the folder named "Data" in your Heroes folder. There is "equi.h4r" file. Copy it to the same folder with a new name "x2.h4r".
- Now if you had "The Gathering Storm" try running Equilibris.

For Standard Edition continue with the following steps:

- Create an empty file named "storm.h4r" in "Data" folder of the game.

If your Heroes-IV version is 2.0 or higher - Equilibris should be playable now. If you have not patched the game - make the next step too.

- Download "updates.h4r" file from Downloads section and put it into "Data" folder. Now try running the game.

Attention! We can not guarantee stable and bug free work of the game, modified in this way. We simply did not make the thorough tests. Though other players report no bugs or crashes.

As for maps compatibility. For Equilibris players with TGS - you will be able to open original and TGS maps , AND some of WoW maps! For Equilibris made of Standard Edition - standard maps AND some of WoW and TGS maps will be available. We will appreciate any feedback on that issue.

Q-10: I installed Equilibris and I see changes made. But where are the campaigns?

A: As we wrote on "About" page, new campaigns will be included in final Equilibris release. All intermediate versions - mods - are meant to test game balance and technical innovations.

Q-11: There are many new objects announced on your "News" page, but I can't find them in campaign editor. Where are they?

A: Just as campaigns, most new objects will be included in final Equilibris release. Until then only few of those objects will be included in current releases. They are all gathered in equi.aop file in "Downloads" page.

Q-90: I am a good artist (3-D modeler, designer, programmer, musician). How can I help the project?

A: Just mail us and describe what you could do best. We are no big and beurocratic organisation - we are the team of young flexible people. We will find the common language.

Q-99: Something doesn't work ! Help me !!!

A: Unfortunately, we cannot adequately respond to such request :(
